Manchester United have set their sights on a surprise move for unsettled Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali.

The Telegraph revealed on Sunday evening that the 30-capped Italian international has been placed ‘high’ on United’s shortlist ahead of a summer in which he’s expected to be on the move.

Despite being contracted to St. James’ Park until 2029, Tonali is considering a transfer away from the club at the end of the season after his agent confirmed that he was harbouring doubts over his future on Tyneside.

NEW: Sandro Tonali’s agent has revealed that the player is considering leaving Newcastle United in the summer and may need Champions League football to tempt him to stay at St James’ Park.

He is keen on continuing to play in the Champions League, which, unless they defy the odds and win the trophy this campaign, Newcastle will struggle to offer in 2026/2027; they currently sit 12th-placed in the Premier League and are winless in four matches.

As for United, they occupy fourth following an emphatic run of four straight wins under Michael Carrick.

The news of Casemiro’s impending exit when his contract expires in June has only increased their links to midfielders, and Tonali, 25, certainly poses as a suitable successor to the seasoned veteran.

He joins the likes of Adam Wharton (22), Elliot Anderson (23) and Carlos Baleba (22) on INEOS’ shortlist, though the Magpies talisman boasts considerably more experience across Europe than the rest, given the three years he spent with Serie A giants AC Milan.

It’s thought a deal for Tonali could reach the £100 million mark, as Newcastle will be adamant to make their money’s worth after seeing Enzo Fernandez, Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo all generate lucrative transfer fees when moving in recent years.

While Casemiro will leave for nothing, United will be looking to raise transfer funds through the departures of on-loan Reds Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, as well as out-of-favour players such as Manuel Ugarte.
