Mount Injury Leaves United Facing Tough Midfield Decision

Manchester United are not currently pushing forward with a move for Carlos Baleba, according to Fabrizio Romano, even after Mason Mount’s latest injury setback exposed the club’s thin options in midfield.

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, said the 22-year-old Brighton midfielder still wants the move to Old Trafford but that his own recent injury has complicated things further. The Italian added that United are not proceeding with the deal at the moment, with Brighton showing no signs of budging on their valuation.

Mount goes down again vs PSG

The update comes hours after Mount hobbled off early in United’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg, going down the tunnel following an extended discussion with the medical staff and head coach Michael Carrick. It is a fresh blow given how well the Englishman had been playing in pre-season, with Carrick using him in a deeper role alongside Andrey Santos.

That form had reportedly left INEOS weighing up whether a third midfield signing was even necessary this summer. Mount’s situation at United has been under close scrutiny given his injury history, and this latest setback in Sweden serves as a timely reminder that leaning on him as a guaranteed presence would be a gamble.

Baleba still keen, Brighton still stubborn

United’s interest in Baleba is nothing new. The Red Devils agreed personal terms with the player last summer before Brighton’s exorbitant valuation ultimately killed the deal. That interest was reignited this year, but Brighton’s asking price remains a sticking point, and now Baleba’s own injury has added another layer of difficulty to any potential deal.

United have also considered other midfield options, as covered in the earlier look at United’s wider midfield shortlist. Baleba’s stalled situation leaves the club with a decision to make over its plans for a third midfield addition.

It remains to be seen whether Mount’s latest injury forces Carrick and INEOS to revisit their stance on a third midfield addition, or whether they wait to see how serious the problem actually is before making any fresh move for Baleba.
