Just in: Top managerial candidate set for decisive meeting with Man Utd officials on Saturday

Manchester United directors will hold a face-to-face meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is one of the main candidates for the interim role.

The Red Devils decided to sack Ruben Amorim on Monday following his public outburst in the aftermath of United’s draw against Leeds last Sunday.

The Portuguese tactician has been replaced by Man Utd U18 head coach Darren Fletcher, who was in the dugout for Wednesday’s Premier League contest against Burnley, and will also lead the team in the FA Cup tie against Brighton on Sunday.

However, the Scotsman could resume his duties with the U18 side afterwards, making way for a more experienced interim coach who would fill in until the end of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will meet Man Utd directors on Saturday

In recent days, several sources, including Fabrizio Romano, have identified Solskjaer as the ultimate favourite for the role. The 1999 Champions League hero is so eager to return to Carrington that he’s not bothering himself with all the contract details.

Nevertheless, other reports insisted that Michael Carrick’s chances of landing the role remain very much alive.

In fact, Norwegian journalist and MUFC supporter Eivind Holth has revealed on United.no that the Englishman already held talks with the hierarchy on Wednesday. On the other hand, Solskjaer will arrive on Saturday for a similar meeting.

How will Man Utd bosses proceed after Solskjaer & Carrick meetings?

After meeting both candidates, Man Utd CEO Omar Berrada and the club’s technical director Jason Wilcox will have a major call to make. The decision will likely be communicated at the start of next week.

Holth also lists the four most plausible scenarios that will occur in the coming days. United will either hire one between Solskjaer and Carrick on their own, while a third solution is to rekindle their partnership between 2018 and 2021, when the Englishman acted as the Norwegian’s assistant. The final option is to confirm Fletcher until the end of the season.

Therefore, the incumbent Man Utd head coach will be hoping to make a statement with a strong performance this weekend at Old Trafford to boost his chances of remaining in charge, especially if Solskjaer’s vision fails to convince the MUFC officials.
