Manchester United's Pursuit of Jean-Clair Todibo Stalled by UEFA Regulations
Manchester United's long-term pursuit of centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo faces a significant obstacle due to UEFA regulations. The club's efforts to secure Todibo from OGC Nice have been thwarted by rules that prevent player transfers between clubs under the same ownership, specifically Manchester United and Nice, until September 2024.
UEFA Regulations and Dual Club Ownership
According to a tweet from renowned sports journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal for Jean-Clair Todibo to join Manchester United is "currently off and highly unlikely" due to UEFA rules. Romano noted that discussions were advanced, with all parties keen on the move for months. However, because Manchester United and Nice share the same ownership and are set to compete in the same European competition next season, the transfer has been blocked.
Romano's tweet sent waves of disappointment through the Manchester United fanbase on social media. Fans quickly drew comparisons with Manchester City, who recently navigated a similar situation by acquiring Savio from Girona. City managed this by loaning Savio to another sister club, Troyes, which does not participate in the Champions League.
Can Manchester United Still Acquire Todibo?
The crucial question now is whether Manchester United can still purchase Todibo. Our investigation into UEFA regulations reveals that Manchester United could theoretically buy Todibo before September 2024. However, due to the shared ownership rule, Todibo would be ineligible to play in any UEFA club competitions if he transfers.
UEFA's rules stipulate:
"Following the implementation of significant changes by the clubs and their related investors, the CFCB First Chamber accepted the admission of the aforementioned clubs to the UEFA club competitions for the 2023/24 season. The CFCB found that the significant changes implemented brought the clubs into compliance with the multi-club ownership rule. The clubs will not transfer players to each other, whether permanently or on loan, directly or indirectly, until September 2024."
This means:
1. Permanent Transfers: No players can be permanently transferred between the clubs.
2. Loan Transfers: Players cannot be loaned to each other.
3. Direct Transfers: No direct player movement between the clubs.
4. Indirect Transfers: Transfers involving third parties or intermediaries are also prohibited.
The Todibo Loophole
Despite these restrictions, there is a potential loophole. Todibo can join Manchester United this summer but would be barred from participating in UEFA competitions for the season. He would still be eligible to play in domestic competitions, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and EFL Cup, which are governed by their own financial regulations separate from UEFA's.
In summary, Manchester United could enhance their defence by acquiring Todibo, who would contribute to domestic competitions. With Todibo rated highly by manager Erik ten Hag and valued at a relatively affordable £25 million, the move remains attractive despite the UEFA restrictions. This strategic acquisition could help Manchester United maintain a strong domestic campaign while they navigate the complexities of UEFA regulations.
